PM Board Game
(Pilot Workshop)

This learning experience was intended to be delivered through a self-paced online course and a series of in-person workshops to arm new team members of Enactus George Brown College with project management fundamentals. 

Overview

Audience: new team members who have no previous experience with project management

Responsibilities: Instructional Design, Board Game Design and Prototyping, Pilot Workshop Facilitator

Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Powtoon (animation), Google Docs, Microsoft Visio

Problem and Solution

The mission at Enactus is to engage the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders to use innovation and business principles to improve the world. Enactus George Brown has an increasing number of projects, however, some new team members struggle with delivering results on time and on budget.

 

After talking with the team leader, I determined that some team members lacked the necessary skills to effectively manage team projects. I proposed a series of workshops where the team members could learn and practice managing projects.

Our goal is to introduce project management techniques by providing a safe environment for team members to practice these techniques through games and other fun learning activities. This allows team members to connect the learning experience with real-world project situations.

Pilot Workshop

Since I was the only one facilitating the workshop, the maximum number of attendees is set to 25. We sold all the tickets on Eventbrite, using email, posters and Facebook page as the main marketing channels. 18 people showed up, including students and professionals working on a project and wanting to see project management from a different perspective.

The workshop was scheduled for one hour. After one hour, everyone was willing to keep playing the board game. In the end, the workshop lasted almost two hours. Some of them were asking about the time for the next workshop. In the post-test survey, 14 out of 15 want to join the next workshop.

The client (Enactus George Brown) was surprised about the attendance and how well-received the board game is among the participants. I was told that the workshop would be kept running in the organization and would be a benchmark for other training workshops that would be developed in the future.

The board game might become a bridge between my client and my professor at George Brown College, which could benefit both sides. The board game could be used in the class orientation session as an icebreaker activity. In that case, it would become an excellent channel to market my client among students.

After connecting my client with my professor, my professor considered future student projects to make further enhancements to the board game and developments of workshops.
